Hello Burners,Well, we're doing a new edition of Burning Wheel. I'd like to apologize to start. I hate new editions. On the other hand, I think those of you who play Burning Wheel frequently will agree with me that the game needed a tune up. And I wouldn't have released this book if I didn't think it was the right thing to do.My main goal in producing this revision was to brush away the cruft in the Revised Edition -- the unclear writing, the editorializing and the rules that didn't go anywhere. I wanted to bring out all of the good stuff in the game and get rid of as many bad examples and confusing references as possible. Those of you who know me know that I am a systems tweaker. I do possess the capacity to leave well enough alone, but if given my druthers, I'll start pulling threads. So what started innocently enough two years ago, ended up with Thor, Dro and company looking on in horror as they heard me say, "I don't like this rule anymore. It doesn't do what we want it to. I'm going to change it." Personally, I think I made the right decisions. However, Burning Wheel belongs to you all as much as it does to me now, so you'll be the final judge of my righteous design tweaking.I am confident that those of you who love Burning Wheel will love it even more after digging into this new edition. I am equally confident that those of you on the fence or with less than charitable feelings about the game will not be won over by what I've done. For example, dear old Range and Cover had a single table in BWR. I think it has five or more tables and charts in BWG. Run screaming, you just failed your Steel test.I did not include the advice of the Adventure Burner in BWG. I tried hard to keep the editorials in the Adbu and the procedures in BWG. I did include many, but not all, of the additional rules from the Adbu, though. Most of the stuff in the Magic Burner should work fine with BWG, but you will have to adjust the spell positioning dice for Range and Cover (again!). Sorry. Also, I think I borked Abstractions since Sorcery no longer uses Will+Skill. But we'll fix that bridge when we come to it. As the Monster Burner, well, he's showing his age. The core of it is fine, but all of the traits and skills could stand to be updated at this point. I'm not certain what the Monbu's fate will be, honestly. We shall see!If you look at the new BWG character sheet, you'll note that there are only two things that have changed: Speed Multiplier has been changed to Stride (thanks, Pete!) and Weapon Speed is now a number instead of Fast, Slow Unwieldy. So it's not that the whole game has changed. It's largely the same, just tweaked based on our play experiences (and my particular frustration with the Elven Spell Song obstacles).I think the things I'm most excited about are the new scripting sheets. Ben Morgan worked his ass off to produce some attractive, clean designs. I like them so much, I'm going to sell them to you! We're going to offer packages of laminated sheets for sale on the site, but you'll still be able to download the PDF template for free. Though I bet our prices will be better than your copy shop.Wait, that's not true. The thing I'm most excited about is the end of the Fight positioning discussions. I hope you all find the new method straight forward but tactically interesting. I feel that it reemphasizes the good stuff in Fight while providing for interesting decisions. Oh, and be afraid: I've described the interactions for every action you could possibly take in Fight. In the next month, I will move all of the BWR discussions to an archive on the forums. Same goes for the wiki. All of the current stuff will be labeled BWR and set off. So if there's anything you want to download, do it now. I might get cheeky and delete it all. We're going to do preorders slightly differently this year. We're waiting until we have the books in our warehouse before we start selling them to you. That way, you can get them in a timely fashion -- no more waiting three months! We can only do 250 preorders (because we're only human), but we're going to do 50 a day for a week. Hopefully, that'll give everyone a fair chance to get what they want. Our priority is to get them to you before we send them to stores. Also, I'm doing the t-shirts a little differently. Rather than taking custom sizes, I'm offering 100 t-shirts (of various sizes). When they sell out, they're gone. As you know, our t-shirts are always awesome and you always want one when you don't get one. And I think this one is going to be one of our best yet. Black shirt, gold wheel! And did you see that new wheel? It's incredibly detailed. And did I mention the new art? I couldn't resist and I commissioned a bunch of new stuff from Rebekah Bennington, Jordan Worley, Richard Luschek and Kurt Komoda. It's all really top-notch stuff (replacing some of the, erm, quainter pieces in BWR). Wait til you see Rebekah's fighting illustrations. They are all true stories reenacted by Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and Roden!Anyway, I'm very excited for you all to get your hands on the game. If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer. But my answer will most likely be: You'll have to wait and see!
EDIT:ho scritto Hordak...
