1 – MONGOOSE TRAVELLER
The Referee
One of the participants is the Referee, who describes the world
around the characters, presents them with challenges and dangers,
and takes on the role of the supporting cast and the antagonists.
The Referee creates the basic outline of the scenarios that the player
characters encounter and resolves the results of their actions using
the rules in this book as a guideline.
2 -SOLAR SYSTEM
The Story Guide presides over play and
eggs it along, kinda like a chairman who
reminds the other players to move on to
the next step. This works on both large
scale (framing scenes) as well as small
(“Whose turn is it, again?”).
The Story Guide frames scenes, which is
one half chairmanning (that “Whose turn
is it, again?”) and one half dramatic
coordination. ......
The Story Guide by default plays all
secondary characters. Usually this
means making judgements over their
motivations and priorities, complemented
with a dash of play-acting.
The Story Guide establishes conflict
stakes and guides the narration of
conflicts accordingly. .....
The Story Guide is the traditional high
authority in any rules disagreements,
because he might be a tad more detached
and neutral. It’s not unusual for the other
players to turn to the Story Guide for an
answer in a rules tangle.
3 - CHANGELING THE DREAMERS
The Storyteller describes what happens to the characters as a
result of the players' words and actions. She decides if the
characters succeed or fail, suffer or prosper, live or die.
Storytelling is a very demanding task, but it is equally
rewarding, for the Storyteller is a weaver of legends.
The Storyteller's primary duty is to make sure the
other playershave a good time. The way to do that is to tell
a good tale. Unlike traditional storytellers, however, the
Storyteller doesn't simply tell the story. Instead she creates
the skeleton of a story and then lets the players flesh it out
by assuming the roles of its leading characters.
