I ended up using your suggestion ( http://www.scriblink.com/ ) to play out the game online. It seems to work best if just one person does all the scribbling.

I'm really glad that you've stuck to the core of the system. It's a lot of fun to play when you can enjoy all the dice stacking energy. It is a perverse kind of game, and it rewards a gooey sense of humour. Thanks for reporting.

I'd really love to see how the rest of the game goes. Particularly, I'm interested to see how you get on in the end game, and how many Rest Scenes you need just to make to the end.

It looks like you're totally fucked, if you've already lost a player! Good job! That's the spirit!

Here's the answer to your questions:

1) No. Just try to make them do something they don't want their character to do.
2) After a Collapse, resolve the effects and rebuild the stack. However, you will either be building it with more dice (if the result was a Spotlight or a Complication) or less dice (you will get one or more Traumas, reducing the stack by that many dice).
3) Yes, yes, yes! Totally. You managed the improbable and you deserve a reward!
4) It's up to you. If you think that the Objective was sufficiently interesting or important, you could continue the next scene from the exact moment the last scene left off, or you could cut to some other place, much later on. Just think about how many VP you need to acquire before you reach the next Checkpoint, where you are now, and try to frame a scene that intersects with that timeline appropriately.

The biggest nod must go to John Gregory's unpublished The Hammer Falls. Gregory's game asks you to create four manifestations of an oppressive society, each ascribed to a suit of cards. As these suits turn up in play, the society throws obstacles at you, coloured appropriately. It's a rich, contemporary and inspired take on the usual oracle system. I just added in some imagery. Total plagerism!

Next, I must credit Joe Prince's Hell for Leather, in which a few, specific scenes are played out under the tyrranic gaze of a single antagonist. I liked the idea that one player would represent an enemy, foreshadowing the oncoming atrocity, and that this player would manage pacing. H4L inspired a couple of the important design decisions, adding momentum to the idea at the earliest stage. Similarly, Graham Walmsley's A Taste for Murder jump-started the project. I was interested in messing around with his scene theming (the part where players are rewarded for pushing particular themes). Again, not so much a direct rip-off as a point from which I leapt forward.

Lastly, I'll mention Best Friends by Gregor Hutton. In looking for a way to manipulate other people's characters in a scene, I eneded up with a Push mechanic similar to the mechanic in Best Friends. It's looser, probably needs a bit more work, and so on. But it was definitely thanks to Hutton that it went into the second draft.

I also robbed suggestions from Jonathan Walton, Eoin Corrigan, Adam Kelly and (through another party) Ron.

How are you all doing?

I just uploaded a new, super-shiny and thoroughly playable (?) version of Chronicles of Skin. I've been playtesting, meddling around, and robbing from other people's game ideas to get it into shape. I think it's fun. Here's the premise:

It's a pictographic story of war. Collaborating, you build the personalities of two cultures (using cards and symbols, like oracles). In a series of four scenes, you tell of the atrocities each side commit, and you record all this in a procedural way, shaping the fiction of the war. Players are pushing for themes, there's a bit of meta-discussion between scenes, and other funky, HIPPY shit.

A few of you wanted to play before. Would you care to read the new rules? It's 12 pages. It's not a layout masterpiece, by any means, but it's easy enough on the eyes.

I didn't think of it like that, but yeah, that's awesome. Here's the structure:

  • The Challenged player asks for help (unless he has 4 Story Pips, in which case he must do it alone).
  • Anyone can donate Story Pips to the Challenged player (to bring his total up to 4).
  • After the Challenged player rolls (Violence, Risks, etc.), anyone who donated Story Pips can roll too (assuming the end result was a Fail).
  • After all donating players roll, if the result is a Fail/Collapse, add a Trauma to the result.


Looks like a good house rule. Potential side effects: Moving through the Checkpoints more quickly, Increasing the frequency of Traumas, Pushing Scene Setup on the same players, over and over, and god knows what else.

If it works out okay, I'll support it on the website. So let me know.

Yeah, it's a bit unclear all right. It's one of those things I tried to address in the errata. If you like, you could add in a new entry to the errat a wiki?

If it works in the fiction, then yes. Technically, you are framing the next scene as an immediate follow-up from the last scene (and the guy with the lowest number of Story Pips should take a Story Pip.), where the scene type is a Run Scene, the Scene Objective is "Do the thing the other guy fucked up," and the Location is, well, where you are.

That's never, ever happened to me! Wow! I guess you do what you did. Keep the same rules, but occlude some of the players from the action. Those other players could still Threat and Challenge, but they could not narrate for their own character (unless they wanted to do a "meanwhile" cut, which would be funky). In fact, someone should try to run a game where each of the contestants is in a completely different location, and each of them, somehow, is contributing to the same goal in every scene. Heist movie, anyone?

No, the Heat only resets when you get to the end game. Using short Rest Scenes is the only way to reduce the height of the stack.

Yes, but it got scrapped during playtesting. If you want, you can:

P.S. Mauro told me that his Target got mashed up on the way home, so I sent him a replacement (he just paid for the packaging). If anyone else has had the same problem, let me know. I realise now (experience is the best teacher) that an 11x11 inch square of 12pt cardboard is not easy to carry around. In other words, you paid me for something and if it got damaged because I designed it badly and you want a replacement for free, tell me so I can make you happy.

I have no idea what you guys are saying, but I had a read through your game Alex and I'm really excited by the character generation questions. I love the idea of creating something important and having other people abuse it. It forces you into interesting confrontations. Lovely job!
