ok... so... initially I was identifying things like this:
Challange = single task
Contest = sustained/contested task
But the way you describe them it looks like a Challange is too a "sustained" task, as it is a *series* of linked tasks/rolls aimed at a single final outcome.
Basically the same identical thing than a Contest.
The only difference being that one has passive/set difficulty, while the other has active/dynamic difficulty.
Also, they both are played out roll-by-roll, so that at each moment the acting PCs could decide to take a different route.
Am I correct?
The only true *functional* difference would be that Contests have a more pronounced PERCEIVED level of pressure, because if my PC fails his rolls or loses time the immediate and very present consequence is right in front of my eyes: the opposition gets its goal.
While in a Challange it is practically the same, but in a less obvious (less pressant) way.
As each failed roll, each success with a cost, each moment of lost time ... they all propmt the GM to produce immediate and real consequences ... but they are an abstract and possible eventuality, not a specific and pre-declared outcome (as is the opposing goal in a Contest).
Am I getting this right?

XD
Quella discussione l'ho aperta io e ci ho partecipato fino all'ultimo post! >__<

Si lo so ti ho pure risposto là!
Non era per te ;)
Magari qualcuno leggendo dei tuoi dubbi vuole approfondire!
