Hello,

Thanks for writing about the game! This thread is great to read.

I think there's a little question at the end of the exchange, but it's very little - meaning, in English, not very important.

Pippo Jedi, your reading of the Tripwire rule is accurate. You can specify a character's strong response to that condition or event.

I see! Many thanks for the clarification. I agree with you.

Alessandro, please discuss further:

Senza Edwards l'intero movimento indie si è spento, e anche con Edwards il movimento stava degenerando verso qualcosa di altro (e imho davvero indesiderabile).

This is great to read, and I want to see the final decisions for the characters, especially the tally.

Alessandro, the Google-translate version of your name is hilarious.

I am not ordinarily known as a person who begs. However, this campaign has raised $5000 out of $6000, and pledges have become very scarce suddenly. I miss INC and Bertinoro and all the people I met there, so I am going to offer you something no one else will get. Every three-book order sent to Italy will also receive its own original monster for the Crescent land, illustrated.

Moreno, stop scolding the poor guy. He gets it now!

I am really happy that this thread is a learning experience. The myth that "I am so smart, I already know how to role-play, this game didn't 'work' so it sucks," is one of the most toxic in the hobby. Elijah, thanks for being here and thinking about the game.

I successfully butchered Freemarket not too long ago. I hope I can learn the game better from that too.

Clarifications.

#1: The GM may refuse to permit an NPC from becoming a Relationship only if that NPC has been designated with a name in the GM's preparation. Otherwise, the GM does not have that privilege. Also, in regard to named NPCs, the GM could possibly say "yes" as well as "no;" he or she does not decide prior to play.

#2: The setting is not high fantasy. A village of humanoid plants is not within the rules. The GM begins by deciding whether trolls, humans, or both are present in the chosen location.  He or she then decides what the Stakes are. Any magical or surreal elements are then added only to reinforce the importance of the Stakes. The text is very clear about this important point.

Alessandro: Yes. That is exactly the point. Do not try to win a "most horrible" prize when you write your Trespasses at the start of play. It says "something you think is wrong," and there is no superlative language at all in the rules.

Moreno: why are you making it so hard? Obviously the principal is the wife's sister. Thus the Trespass remains exactly the same. In this case, moving the "doer" to one of the other characters in the Trespass does not change its content in a meaningful way. "Beat up an old man," for instance, would not permit such a shift; you couldn't make the principal the old man.

You wrote,

The way I see it, to ADAPT That trespass to her the principal player B has a lot of options: he can swap "wife" with "boyfriend" (changing the sister's gender too ... or not), or he can add a previous marriage as a part of the secret swap and "wife" with "husband" or he can even say That the principals in the past was a man and then changed gender (so "wife" and "sister" stay the same)

Switching wife/boyfriend works fine. A previous marriage works fine.

Your suggestions about changing genders for characters so they will accord with the textual Trespass are ridiculous. Obviously what's wrong (to the writer) is the cheating and the complication of sibling-hood, so preserve that concept, make sure agency lies with the principal, and you're all set.

Hi Moreno,

What you wrote in that particular post is against the rules, unlike your previous posts which were very enlightening and helpful.

Regarding your example about the infidelity, everything you said is OK. The responsibility lies with the player for the principal to have cheated on his wife and not told her or anyone else about it. So it would probably have to be some other infidelity than the ones established so easily in the fiction. The reason behind that secrecy could be either minor or major as the player sees fit.

As long as the requirement for the Trespass is met - secrecy - than the rule will work fine. Please note as well that the Trespass is not intended to be some terrible twist that horrifies everyone at the table. It only matters that the principal - for whatever reason - does not want to tell anyone.

Some clarifications.

1. The trespass should not be altered as freely and drastically as Moreno suggests. The action and situation should remain as written, changing only details to make it possible for this character to have done it. For example, if the Trespass involves a parent and a child, and the character has no children, then have it apply to a small child the character knew.

2. The character did in fact do the Trespass, before the story-in-play begins. This is a fixed part of the character's history, whether it is revealed during play or not.

Moreno is right.

A person's turn in this game is best understood as adding image for a moment. No one person "plays a scene" or is responsible for scenes as a whole in any way. In retrospect, yes, as many as twenty turns may have contributed to what became a scene during play, or more, or less. When your turn begins, the best thing you can do is think of the two fictional situations at the table, and make one of them just the tiniest bit longer or more detailed, then pass the turn to the next person. If you find yourself struggling to decide what to put into the situation, then you should stop and not do anything at all. In one of our groups, we call this "It's raining," or "It's foggy and smoky," because those are very frequent descriptions in spy novels set in Berlin.

Alessandro, you are also correct that your turn is not your turn to "be your character," but rather to add to the fiction. It's true that if you feel like adding actions and attitudes for characters as you way to add content at that moment, then you are technically playing a character at least for that moment. But remember that there is no true character ownership in Spione. You or any other player may well find yourself playing a different character every single turn. And similarly, if you look back over the last hour of play, you should be able to see that each character was actually a composite of all the different players who chose to speak and act for him or her throughout that time.

The link is completely absent when viewed through Google Translate, even when I switch it back to Italian. It only appears when I view the page directly. For a while, I thought you were torturing me, like making a cat chase a spot of light.

Clearly, I am not very bright. Alessandro, how do I find what you are talking about? Or is it something I knew about already?

Hi Antonio,

I would love to do that, but I don't know how, and I don't know how much labor and money would be required to make it happen. That's why I did not promise the books in other formats.

If anyone would like to provide me with real, solid estimates and procedures for doing this (especially for multiple formats), then I might be able to add such things to the Kickstart in the form of a reward tier, probably set at $50.
